Xiaomi has developed its own smartphone chip called Surge S1 and will be using it in Mi 5C

Right now the most widely used smartphone chips come from Qualcomm. Many smartphone manufacturers depend on its Snapdragon series of processors. To reduce its dependence on third party smartphone chips, the Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi has developed its own smartphone chip called Surge S1.

So far, the company has been getting its smartphone microchips from Qualcomm and MediaTek. The problem is, most of the smartphone companies get their smartphone chips from these manufacturers, so no matter how much innovation you put into your device, by the end of the day, it is using the processing technology being used pretty much by every other smartphone on the market. Electronics companies Huawei and Samsung have already developed their own microchips.

According to in the a TV is Lei Jun, co-founder and chief executive officer of Xiaomi, “Chips occupy the commanding height in the smartphone battle. Core technologies, such as chips, are must-have technologies for Xiaomi to become a great company.”

The Chinese government has been pouring billions of dollars into homegrown chip companies to end the country’s reliance on semiconductor technologies built in foreign countries. Xiaomi also received financial help from the Chinese government.

Xiaomi’s mid-range mobile phone Mi 5C will be the first smartphone to use Surge S1. The smartphone is already available in the market.

Xiaomi Mi 5c

The Mi 5C mobile phone, aside from the fact that it will be powered by the new Xiaomi microchip Surge S1, will have 3GB RAM and 64GB storage. It will have dual Sim capabilities. The display will be 5.15 inches with 1080×1920 pixels (428 PPI density).

The microSD slot will be missing. The primary camera will be 12 megapixels and the secondary camera will be 8 megapixels. The mobile phone will be using a nonremovable Li-Ion 2860mAh battery. As sensors it will have a fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, gyro meter, proximity sensor and a compass.
