Technology companies that are deeply involved with the development of artificial intelligence have come under one umbrella to make sure that the AI robots one day don’t take over the world and even if there is a possibility, people don’t get overly worried. According to this Fortune Magazine update tech giants like Facebook, Google, Amazon, IBM and Microsoft are coming together and launching a non-profit to “advance public understanding” of artificial intelligence. The non-profit organization may also draw guidelines for best practices while using AI robots as well as working with them. The name of the non-profit is going to be The Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society. People from Amazon, Facebook, Google, IBM and Microsoft will be on the group’s 10-member board.
According to the official statement from the group, as listed in the above link, the purpose of the nonprofit group is not to lobby government or other policy-making bodies. The sole purpose of the partnership will be to carry out research and recommend best practices relating to “ethics, fairness and inclusivity; transparency, privacy, and interoperability; collaboration between people and AI systems; and the trustworthiness, reliability and robustness of the technology.”
The board will also include representatives from the academia and other nonprofit organisations working either in the same field or related fields.
In the past the development in the realm of artificial intelligence was quite slow but suddenly, in the past 5-6 years, there has been an upsurge in the development of various artificial intelligence systems and major companies like Google, Microsoft, IBM, Amazon and Facebook have made great progress in this field. This has happened primarily due to breakthroughs in fields like deep learning and deep neural networks. Neural networks work the way brain works and now machines can teach themselves how to recognize complex patterns. People are fearful that one day we will have artificial intelligence so intelligent that it will be capable of not just replicating itself, but also create higher level of artificial intelligence on its own.
As mentioned above, the primary purpose of the nonprofit being formed by Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, IBM and Google is to dispel fear about artificial intelligence and raise awareness about its benefits. Public concern is often inspired by rational and irrational fears. Rational fears include economic dislocation and job loss. Irrational, at least so far irrational, fears include robots armed with artificial intelligence taking over the world and making humanity its slave. Some fear that companies engaged in the development of artificial intelligence and robotics may also trigger wars in pursuit of superiority.
