An official Twitter account has become an integral part of the government office like the President or the Prime Minister. In America the President is normally known as POTUS that stands for “President of the United States”. The official Twitter handle is @POTUS. Since this Twitter account belongs to the incumbent President it is assumed that most of the tweets coming from this Twitter handle represent the overall approach of the President. So if the Twitter handle of the President makes a comment on a national policy or an international political situation, it is safely assumed that the same is the position of the President.
Twitter isn’t an old phenomenon. It suddenly exploded into prominence after Barack Obama became the president of the United States. Before that, none of the presidents had a social media or social networking account. So, now the question is being raised, what happens to the @POTUS Twitter account once Obama moves out of the office and new President comes in whether it is Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump?
One opinion is that maybe the new president will inherit the account and the followers but not the tweets and the tweets will be deleted or if not deleted, then archived, so that the new president can start with a clean slate. This is the source that says that the existing tweets will be deleted and preserved in the National archives and the Twitter account would be handed over to the new president along with 11 million followers.
According to a statement from the White House, all the existing tweets will be moved to a new Twitter account called @POTUS44 as Obama is the 44th President of the United States. This is a good solution. So the next time when a president’s account is archived (hoping that Twitter survives till then) maybe it will be @POTUS45.
Interestingly, when I was checking the POTUS Twitter account, I noticed that it is not named as the official US President’s account, it is named as “President Obama” and not just that, he has also tweeted in support of Hillary Clinton. This is weird, picking political sides and maybe this is the reason why the new president cannot inherit the tweets of the old president. It would be quite contradictory if the name for the POTUS Twitter account appears as “President Trump” and there are lots of tweets in support of Hillary Clinton.
