If you’re scratching your head wondering why is Pokemon Go banned in Iran, nobody seems to know. For all you know, even the Irani government doesn’t know why Pokemon Go is banned in Iran, but then that is not a surprise.

Iran earns the distinction of becoming the first country to completely ban the game Pokemon Go. Although a few weeks ago Pokemon Go was declared haram by a Saudi cleric citing Islamic law, it hadn’t yet been banned in any country due to that.

Why is Pokemon Go banned in Iran and who has banned it?

There is this ominous-sounding  High Council of Virtual Spaces that has banned Pokemon Go in Iran due to “security concerns”. What those security concerns are, hasn’t yet been specified. The Council waited to see “to what extent the game’s creators would co-operate with them,” before banning the game, again, not making clear what sort of co-operation is being sought from the creators of Pokemon Go. Well, this doesn’t exactly tell why Pokemon Go is banned in Iran and in fact, it sounds quite shady if you repeatedly read the line “to see to what extent the game’s creators would co-operate.”

The Supreme Council of Virtual Space was established in 2012 by the order of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to this BBC link, although Iran has banned Pokemon Go in its entirety, and nobody seems to know why it has been banned in Iran, in various forms the game is being banned or restricted by various government authorities all over the world. As mentioned above, the game was declared haram by a Saudi cleric as the game is known to contain forbidden images and it also encourages people to indulge in gambling which is haram in Islam. The Indonesian government has banned its police officers from playing the Pokemon Go for chasing critters instead of criminals.

New York’s correctional department considers it a parole violation if sex offenders play Pokemon Go. Predators can use the game to lure children and teenagers to isolated spots, putting them in grave danger.

There are different speculations all over the Internet why Iran’s High Council of Virtual Spaces has banned Pokemon Go. There have been lots of incidents of trespassing, and this problem is not just contained in Iran. People are known to have entered highly sensitive areas while playing the game. Some people have also been waylaid by having been tricked into visiting isolated spots while playing Pokemon Go but this has mostly happened in America and Australia.
