There are many smartwatches in the market that mostly work in sync with your smartphone nearby. The new smartwatch being launched by Samsung called Gear S, the Korean company claims, can make and receive phone calls even when your smartphone isn’t nearby. The smartwatch has a 3G modem inside that lets you go online without an associated device. Along with 3G connectivity it also comes with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. You can use the smartwatch as standalone phone and you can also forward calls from your existing smartphone via Bluetooth. In case you want to reply to text messages, you can either use the on-screen keyboard (now that would require some talent at micro typing) or you can use the S Voice functionality that enables you to dictate your messages. You will also get turn by turn navigation from HERE (a cross-platform navigation service from Nokia) and a 24-hour news service provided by The Financial Times. In order to take care of your health, the device comes equipped with S Health from Samsung and the Nikkei + running app.

Gear S has a 2-inch super AMOLED screen (it basically allows pixels to activate quickly and show you high definition displays in a small screen) with 360 x 480 resolution, dual-core 1 GHz CPU, GPS, a compass, a pulse rate reader, a UV monitor and heart rate and motion sensors. The 300mAH battery lasts for two days according to the product description released by the company.

Since the smartwatch can make and receive phone calls, you can insert a SIM into it for 3G capabilities – the SIM card slot is on the underside of the watch (as you can see in the image above). According to the witnesses, the smartwatch is currently available in “Blue Black” and “Pure White”. The band is changeable so I guess you will be able to get bands of different colours with the same watch.

Instead of the usual Android, the Samsung Gear S smartwatch runs on a new operating system from Samsung called Tizen. It’s being flouted as an open source operating system that can run almost all devices including mobile phones, wearable, vehicular as well as televisions.

The Samsung Gear S smartwatch will be available by October 2014.
