How to connect my tab to my smartphone to share the Internet

Wi-Fi connection of tab to smartphone to share Internet connection

Sudhir from Bangkok asks:

When I bought my tab I had mostly planned to use it at home and at office where I constantly have Wi-Fi connection. In order to save money I didn’t buy a tab with the Sim card slot so I can’t use 3G or 4G connection to connect to the Internet. But these days I need to travel a lot and I don’t get Wi-Fi connection everywhere. Since my smartphone has 3G and 4G connection, can I connect my tab to my smartphone to share the Internet connection with it? I know it can be done, but just don’t know how to do it? Please help.

Hello Sudhir.

Yes, you can easily connect your tab to your smartphone in order to share its Internet connection to surf the web. It is called “tethering”. In order for tethering to work your mobile data connection needs to be switched on – this means you should be able to surf the Internet using your smartphone (without the Wi-Fi connection, through the Sim card). Once you have ensured that your Sim card is working, you need to switch on “Mobile network sharing”. This means you need to turn your smartphone into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. In order to turn this feature on, you need to go to the Settings of your mobile phone and within Settings, you need to go to the “Wireless & Networks” section (or whatever that section is called on your particular mobile phone).

Within this section you need to find out something like “Internet sharing” or “Mobile network sharing”. There will be an on/off switch. Touch the icon and turn this feature on. If you tap on it, you will also find a key or a password that you will need to enter on the device that you are trying to connect to the smartphone, in your case, that would be your tab.

Then you have to go to your tab and open the Wi-Fi settings. You will be able to see the name of your smart phone in the list of available Wi-Fi connections. Just tap on the name and you will be asked to enter the password that you found on your mobile phone. Once you have correctly entered the password, your tab will be connected to your smart phone and you will be able to share its Internet connection.

It’s not just your tab that can be connected to your mobile phone in order to share its Internet connection. You can even connect your laptop in case there is no Wi-Fi connection and you need to quickly access the Internet. In fact, any device that uses the Wi-Fi connection in order to log onto the Internet can be connected to your smart phone to share its Internet connection.
