In urban and business areas, finding a parking space is as important as being able to drive around and navigate using technology. Perhaps this is why Google Maps has just released an update that will tell you whether you’re going to get parking space or not at a particular location or destination.
For example, you’re driving to a concert or a railway platform or even some famous tourist destination, and you know that it may be difficult to find a parking space. If you know in advance what is the parking space situation at your destination, you can plan accordingly and this is where Google Maps can help you.
After this Google Maps update, when you search for the place you’re visiting, along with the travel time estimation and the distance, now you will also get to know if there is parking space available or not. This bit of information will be represented by a “P” icon.
The maps app will use historical parking data to calculate a parking difficulty score which may vary between “Limited”, “Medium” and “Easy”. “Historical parking data” seems to be a caveat, which means, the app may not be able to tell you the current situation. So whether you’re going to get parking space or not isn’t based on the current situation of the location, but on historical data.
As usual, this feature may not be available in your area but you may soon get it. Currently the app covers 25 metro areas in the US including:
- Dallas/Fort Worth
- Los Angeles
- Minneapolis/St. Paul
- New York City
- San Diego
- San Francisco
- Washington, DC
