Gionee is mostly known in India and China for selling cheap and mid-range smartphones. The company is now entering higher-end, luxury phone market. Its latest Gionee M2017 has more specs than iPhone 7 and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 and of course, it is more expensive too. It may cost anywhere between Rs. 60,000 and Rs. 120,000.
But I was just wondering, would you purchase a very expensive phone from a relatively unknown brand like Gionee? If I’m spending so much money on an expensive smartphone, I would rather spend it on Apple, Samsung, HTC or even Microsoft. But of course unless people are ready to bet on unknown brands, they are not going to become known brands.
Anyway, Gionee M2017 comes with a 5.7-inch LCD display with 2K resolution (2560×1440 pixels). The qHD display gives you multitouch with a pixel density of 511 pixels per inch. The screen is scratch resistant.
The Gionee M2017 smartphone is powered by a 1.95GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 octa-core SoC processor.
It runs on Android 6.0.
You can use two Sims with the smartphone.
You get 6GB of RAM to run your apps. The smartphone comes with two internal storage options: 128GB and 256GB. Since Gionee thinks that this much of storage space should be enough for everybody, the smartphone does not come with a microSD slot.
According to the company, the biggest strength of the phone is its battery life. One charge can last for more than 31 hours of talk time. How does Gionee M2017 achieve this?
It gives you a 7000mAH battery juice and since 7000mAH batteries that can be fitted inside smartphones are not yet available, Gionee M2017 uses two batteries of 3500mAH each.
So much battery means, as already mentioned above, 31 hours of talk time, 915 hours of standby mode and almost 26 hours of video playback.
Since Gionee M2017 comes with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, you can charge the phone really fast.
What about the camera? The camera on Gionee M2017 has a dual-module for the rear camera with 12 megapixels and 13 megapixels sensors. They also have LED flash. The camera supports 4K video recording and 10x zoom. The front-facing camera is 8 megapixels.
Other features with the camera include geo-tagging, digital zoom, auto focus, touch focus, face detection and HDR.
The sensors that are built into Gionee M2017 are light sensor, proximity sensor, fingerprint sensor, accelerometer and multitouch.
Strangely, when most of the higher-end phones these days are waterproof, Gionee M2017 is neither dustproof nor water resistant.
Apple removed the 3.5mm audio jack from iPhone 7 and Gionee has decided to follow suit with this phone: Gionee M2017 doesn’t have the 3.5mm audio jack. Instead, you have the USB Type-C port.
For connectivity, it has dual SIM, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth and GPS.
Oddly, it does not have NFC.
