People can buy OnePlus X without an invite in India for quite some time now – maybe mid December 2015 – and now you can purchase these highly coveted smartphones in the US directly from the seller’s website. In India the phone has been available without invite just once a week, every Tuesday.

Although smartphones from Apple, Samsung, LG, HTC and even Google and Microsoft are quite prevalent in the US, OnePlus isn’t as widely recognized as it is in Asia and Europe.

In order to increase demand, the OnePlus range of smartphones are initially sold based on invitation. For example, in order to be able to buy a OnePlus smartphone, you need to get an invite from a person who already owns this particular smartphone. You may think that it restricts the sale of the phones, but it actually establishes a sense of exclusivity. Remember how in the beginning even Gmail was invite-only?

Normally it takes OnePlus almost a year to remove the invite-only restriction. For example, for the original OnePlus One smartphone, it took the company almost a year to move on to direct sales so that people could buy the phones without invites. In the case of OnePlus X they ook only three months. OnePlus 2 took four months to become invite-free. In the US, OnePlus X, despite having all the premium features expensive smartphones have, costs around $ 290.

Compared to OnePlus One and 2 the X model is seemingly smaller. Presently it is available in two colours namely Onyx and Ceramic and the latter is a bit expensive. The back is made of glass and is quite resistant to damage. It has AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colours and 5.0-inch size. It comes with a freer version of Android called OxygenOS 2.2.0, otherwise, it is shipped with Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop). The smartphone is powered by QUALCOMM Snapdragon 801 with a quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU. The primary camera (the rear camera) is 13 megapixels and the facing camera is 8 megapixels. It has 3 GB RAM and it comes with 16 GB storage space with an option of a microSD card slot of 128 GB.
