When in China, do as the Chinese government tells you to do – and this is what Apple is doing. Whereas in America people start screaming “liberty” and “freedom of expression” at the drop of a hat, they suddenly become quite accommodating in countries like China and Saudi Arabia. In America, Apple wouldn’t even hand over the access to the iPhone of the terrorist to the FBI, but in China, Apple quickly abides by the local laws and removes its New York Times app from its Chinese App Stored, as reported in this NPR link.
Apple has cited “local regulations” for removing the New York Times app from its Chinese App Store. Both English language and Chinese language versions of the app were removed on December 23, 2016. Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times are still available.
